CLIFTON — Staten Island's P.S. 57 received a $3,000 grant to help fund its Junior Farmer Green Team, the American Forest Foundation announced Thursday.

The grant, awarded by the AFF's Project Learning Tree, will fund the program for fourth and fifth graders that will take students on a trip to a farm in Vermont then let them plan and grow their own vegetable garden in a park near the school.

“The students will be involved with all aspects of planning and implementation of our projects,” Patricia Lockhart, a science teacher at the school, said in a statement.

“Their leadership skills will be further enhanced by working as mentors for younger students, conducting public presentations and interacting with professionals and community leaders.”

The school was one of 47 awarded the grant this year.

The AFF lauded the P.S. 57 as a leader in green education.
