ASTORIA — A massive new performance venue is looking to make its corner of Astoria into an entertainment destination — complete with Thai kickboxing matches, Greek singers and concerts from Latin DJs.
Melrose Ballroom, which opened earlier this month at 36-08 33rd St., is a large events space designed to host corporate and private parties as well as nightlife and entertainment like concerts and sporting events.
"The scope of this venue is to attract culture, entertainment and other activities [to] the community," said general manager Demetrios Kafchitsas. "Anything that has to do with hospitality and entertainment."
Since opening three weeks ago, the site has hosted Thai kickboxing matches, concerts by Latin DJs and well-known Greek singers, Kafchitsas said.
The owners are also trying to recruit big-name mainstream music acts.
The newly-constructed building boasts four full bars spread out over three levels, including a large ballroom with a stage, an upper-level mezzanine and a VIP lounge for smaller parties that includes an outdoor patio.
The space also has its own kitchen, as well as state-of-the art sound and video systems, according to Kafchitsas.
He says the owners, who own a taxi medallion company, chose the location off of 36th Avenue for its proximity to a growing cultural corridor anchored by Kaufman Astoria Studios, the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts and the Museum of the Moving Image.
"This is a district that is poised to be an attraction point for people," he said. "Where else better than Astoria and Long Island City to open up an entertainment venue?"
Kafchitsas said they also strive to be good neighbors, saying that the building is insulated to keep noise from being heard outside.
"We're community oriented," he said. "We believe no business will flourish without community support."
Upcoming events at Melrose Ballroom include a New Years Eve concert by singer Nikos Makropoulos and shows featuring Greek performer Peggy Zina in January and February, according to the venue's website.
