MANHATTAN — Police are looking for a man suspected of trying to rape a 52-year-old woman, then following her into her Washington Heights apartment and stealing her cellphone.

The attempted sexual assault happened near 175th Street and Haven Avenue about 6 p.m. Friday when the suspect grabbed the woman from behind, police said. The woman screamed and then ran away once the suspect let her go, NYPD sources said.

Surveillance footage released Sunday shows the man running after the woman into an apartment building. When inside building, he stole her cellphone and then ran away, according to police.

The man shown in the video was described as being 5-foot-10 and about 175 pounds, police said. He had short dark hair and a thin beard and wore black jeans, a blue coat and black shoes, police said.

Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-8477. All calls are confidential.
