WASHINGTON HEIGHTS — A man was struck while trying to cross the street by two vehicles and died on Friday evening, police said.

The victim, Antonio Escanio, 76, was crossing Amsterdam Avenue between West 155th and 156th streets west to east at about 5:51 p.m. on Friday, police said.  He was struck first by southbound white 2009 Toyota SUV, police said, then moments later, he was thrown into the northbound lane and struck by a 2012 Chevrolet Malibu. He suffered severe head trauma from the crashes, police said. Both drivers remained on the scene.

Rescuers rushed Escanio to Columbia Presbyterian but he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Escanio lived near the corner of the avenue on West 155th Street, and police said an investigation was ongoing.
