MIDTOWN — Manhattan streets were doused with up to six inches of snow Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

The snow shower started just before 10 a.m., and continued for nearly 12 hours, until temperatures rose and the snowflakes turned into raindrops Saturday night.  The nasty weather tapered off by 10 a.m. on Sunday, leaving slushy sidewalks slippery streets.

Measurements of snow accumulation were all over the map in other parts of the city, ranging from 3 inches in Sheepshead Bay in south Brooklyn, to 7.1 inches in Bedford Park in the northwest Bronx, according to the service. As of 10 p.m., 6 inches was the measurement reported on the Upper West Side.

The weather caused flight delays and cancelations at the city’s airports. Newark Liberty International Airport had 366 flights canceled, while 62 were halted at JFK and 50 at La Guardia Airport as of 6:30 p.m. Saturday, according to the New York Times. Flights were taking off with delays of 15 minutes or less Sunday morning, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Saturday night, the Department of Sanitation deployed 365 salters and 1300 plows across the city. Sanitation officials urged home and business owners to clean the snow and ice from their sidewalks by 11 a.m. Sunday, or risk a fine.

Regular recycling and garbage pick-ups are anticipated for Monday, when sunny skies are expected to return, with a high of 29 degrees.
