THE BRONX — A roaring fire broke out at the Hunts Point Terminal Market Wednesday afternoon, officials said.
The blaze erupted at 722 Edgewater Road, near Spofford Avenue, about 11:15 a.m., according to the FDNY. The fire quickly intensified, but there were no reported injuries, the produce market's public safety office and fire officials said.
A maintenance worker noticed smoke in the rafters of the building and alerted terminal security, a public safety officer said.
"There was a lot of smoke," said the officer.
The Hunts Point Terminal is the largest produce market in the world and generates $2.4 billion a year, according to its website.
