BROOKLYN — A Bushwick man was shot and killed after confronting police with a knife Monday afternoon, police said.

Officers responded to 894 Hart St. just before 3 p.m. on a report that Rexford Dasrath, 22, was menacing a neighbor with a knife, a spokesman for the NYPD said.

When the officers arrived, Dasrath banged on the marked patrol car and then threw a bottle at the car behind them, according to police.

The officers got out of the car and asked Dasrath repeatedly to drop the weapon, the spokesman said.

When he lunged at the officers with a knife, they fired, hitting him in the torso, police said.

He was taken to Woodhull Hospital, where he died, according to the NYPD.

One neighbor said she saw Dasrath arguing police and waving his arms frantically, but did not see a weapon.

"He was getting aggressive with the officer," neighbor Lucy Perez said. "Then I heard gun shots. Pow, pow, pow."

After the shooting, neighbors were surprised by Dasrath's violent outburst. Most people said he used to sit on the front stoop of the building in the morning and drink his coffee.

"He's very quiet," Iris Gonzalez, 59, said.
