WASHINGTON HEIGHTS — A Washington Heights apartment building had to be temporarily evacuated when a fire broke out early Thursday evening, fire officials say.

The blaze started around 5:40 p.m. at 586 West 178th St., FDNY Battalion Chief William Donleavy said. It started on a fourth floor apartment, and officials said the fire was contained to the apartment. Donleavy said that no one was seriously injured, although one woman was treated for smoke inhalation.

"People were running and screaming," resident Jose Cruz said. "You could really smell the smoke."

"I was in the basement and a tenant came down and shouted that there was a fire," building porter Jose Rodriguez said.

Residents were allowed back into the building by around 6:30 p.m.
