FINANCIAL DISTRICT — A man was attacked with a wooden stick in the Financial District last week, police said.

The 49-year-old victim told police a young man whacked him on the head with the stick about 6 p.m. on Oct. 22 as he stood across from 17 State St, near Battery Park.

He suffered “swelling to the head and substantial pain,” according to a criminal complaint.

Police arrested 23-year-old Samuel Hirschfield for the incident. He was charged with second-degree assault, third-degree assault, third-degree attempted assault and second-degree harassment.

Hirschfield was being held on $3,500 bail or $15,000 bond, and was hit with a temporary order of protection commanding him to stay away from the victim, according to court records. His connection to the victim was not immediately clear.

Hirschfield is due back in court on Feb. 26, 2014.

A call to his lawyer was not immediately returned.

Other notable crimes in this week's NYPD blotter in the 1st Precinct include:

► A man shoplifted $1,115 worth of perfume from the Sephora shop in SoHo on Oct. 21 at about 8:30 p.m., police said. The thief managed to grab 11 bottles of fragrance before he took off from the 555 Broadway shop.

► A 25-year-old woman had her iPhone stolen as she searched for the phone in her in bag while walking along Water Street about 7:30 p.m. Saturday, police said. The woman told officers that as she paused on the sidewalk in front of 126 Water St., pulling her phone from her bag, a man appeared before her and demanded she hand over the phone. The moment she looked up, he grabbed the phone and ran off, she told police.

► A woman had her wallet stolen out of her purse as she exited a 1 train at the Franklin Street stop at 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 20. The 24-year-old told police she felt someone bump into her as she left the train, and soon realized that her wallet had been taken out of her purse. The woman found three unauthorized purchases on three separate credit cards — for a total of nearly $500 — before she was able to cancel the cards.

► A 32-year-old woman had her iPhone snatched from her pocket while riding a northbound 4 train about 4 p.m. on Oct. 21. The victim told police that when she boarded the train at the Fulton Street stop, a man pushed up against her right side and quickly jumped out at the next stop. The woman soon realized the man had grabbed her iPhone from her pocket, deftly disconnecting her headphones from the smartphone without her noticing.
