NEW YORK — This week is dominated by the CMJ Music Marathon, which runs until Saturday. CMJ is one of the world’s most important new music festivals, featuring more than 1,400 performances in some 80 nightclubs and theaters.

Access to all official CMJ showcases, events, seminars and workshops costs $549, or $325 for a student badge, though admission to all CMJ events is on a first-come, first-served basis. Hear all the action in this Spotify playlist.



 

Wednesday, Oct. 16
As part of CMJ's series of music panels, songwriters discuss the process of constructing a song, at 3:30 p.m. at NYU Kimmel Center, at 60 Washington Square South. (CMJ)

Music blogs Gorilla Vs Bear and Yours Truly are presenting a free electronic experimental pop-flavored showcase at Glasslands, starring Lee Bannon, Neon Indian’s Leanne Macomber and Ford & Lopatin’s Joel Ford new outfit Ejecta, Sapphire Slows, Tei Shi, Shy Girls, The Range & Saint Pepsi.

Friday, Oct. 18
It looks like Arcade Fire is playing two "secret" fancy dress shows tonight and tomorrow night in Williamsburg at 299 Meserole St. Masquerading as the band "The Reflektors" (the name of their new single) the planned warehouse shows echo a recent show the band performed in their hometown of Montreal. Output is being taken over by innovative label Ghostly International for an unofficial CMJ party. Featuring an intriguing bunch of artists who reflect the progressive modern sounds of their label: Com Truise, Joel Ford, Lord RAJA, Heathered Pearls and Patrick Russell.

Saturday, Oct. 19
At The Delancey, the annual Aussie BBQ features bands that have trekked from Down Under determined to impress jaded New York audiences. They'll try to bribe you with sausages in bread. Listen for Geoffrey O'Connor at 2:40 p.m. and electro hip hoppers Hermitude at 7:20 p.m. (CMJ)

Peaches’ debut feature film "Peaches Does Herself" will begin its New York theatrical release at Quad Cinema on Friday. The film has been a hit at festivals, with Rolling Stone calling it “a cult classic in the vein of the Rocky Horror Picture Show.” She performs tracks from the film and album tonight at Le Poisson Rouge.

Influential music website Pitchfork presents its second CMJ showcase featuring Ryan Hemsworth, Kelela, Traxman at 285 Kent. (CMJ)

The enigmatic Father John Misty (aka Joshua Tillman, former member of Fleet Foxes) plays solo at the Music Hall Of Williamsburg. Friday at the Town Hall.

Canadian singer-songwriter Lindi Ortega's new album, the Nashville-recorded "Tin Star" was recently pegged as the best country album of 2013 by Entertainment Weekly. Catch her Friday and Saturday at SubCulture.

Sunday, Oct. 20
Islands fifth album "Ski Mask," the band’s fifth, percolates with the kind of polymorphous pop and hooky, left-of-center rock songs that have long been the band’s stock-in-trade. At the Bowery Ballroom.

Monday, Oct. 21
Fiona Apple and frequent collaborator Blake Mills play the Beacon Theatre. Apple's fourth studio album, "The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do," entered the Billboard 200 at No. 3, becoming her highest-charting album yet. Her debut album, 1996's "Tidal," received a Grammy Award and six hit singles.

Marking the 10th anniversary of his death, an Elliott Smith Tribute Show is being celebrated at Glasslands Gallery with guests including Cat Power, Zachary Cole Smith (DIIV) with Sky Ferreira, Yoni Wolf (Why?), The Low Anthem and Luke Temple (Here We Go Magic).

Tuesday, Oct. 22
Franz Ferdinand play catchy indie rock with a stylish Scottish swagger.  Singer Alex Kapranos says that their fourth album "Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action" deals with "the idea of the cynic's search for optimism". Check out the video for the title track here. They play Hammerstein Ballroom tonight. Tickets still available

Foxygen recently released a video for their psychedelic romp "We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic," the title track of their most recent album. At the Music Hall of Williamsburg and Monday at Bowery Ballroom.
