QUEENS — A popular after-school program is opening a new center in Forest Hills, hoping to help local kids who struggle with math.

The new branch of Mathnasium, the second in Queens after another outpost opened in Bayside last year, is located on 72nd Ave., between Austin St. and Queens Blvd., near a reading tutoring center and a dance studio for kids, said Kaitlin O’Neill, the center's director.

“There is a lot of interest in our program,” O'Neill said. “We picked Forest Hills because it’s a very family-based community and there are many schools around the area.”

Mathnasium provides instruction in math to students in pre-kindergarten through high school.

O’Neill, who studied mathematics at Penn State University, said that after working for a couple of years as an analyst for Citigroup, she decided to follow her real passion — math.

The center which will officially open in October, has begun to accept applications, she said.

After assessing students' math skills, Mathnasium develops individual learning plans for each student who will later work on their programs with instructors.

When they come to the center, "kids can work on their learning plans or get help with their homework," O’Neill said.

"They pay one monthly fee and they can come whenever they want," she said. "It’s kind of like going to a gym."

The center can serve between 25 and 30 kids at a time.

Mathnasium Forest Hills is located at 108-14 72nd Avenue. Monthly tuition is between $250 and $350, depending on the length that a student will be enrolled. For more information call 718 544 MATH or go here.
