Man Fatally Shot from Behind in the South Bronx

SOUTH BRONX — A man was shot and killed in the late afternoon on Friday by a gunman who attacked him from behind, police said.

Candido Fernandez, 49, of E.178th Street, was walking southbound on Hoe Avenue just below Home Street in Longwood when a gunman approached him from behind him around 5:42 p.m. and shot him in the head, cops said.

The shooter fired off two rounds, striking the victim in the back of the head and his back, according to police, and then took off and passed off the weapon to another suspect.

The victim was rushed to Lincoln Hospital but declared dead on arrival, cops said. No arrests had been made, but police released images of the two suspects on Sunday.
