MANHATTAN — The Guggenheim Museum is looking for some 1970s-savvy sleuths.
The Upper East Side center recently unearthed footage of the Meatpacking District believed to date from the '70s and is asking for the public's help to identify exactly when and where it was filmed.
The choppy, silent 8 mm footage from the Guggenheim's archives, posted to the museum's blog Wednesday, shows truck traffic on cobblestone streets, a trash barrel fire and a man carrying grocery bags.
"Although we don’t know who made these films, the filmmaker’s point of view is clear, as shots of garbage and litter are interspersed with signs reading 'Keep Our City Clean,' 'Rubbish' and 'Clean up after your dog please,'" the museum wrote on its blog.
"We’re not sure how the films entered the collection — any ideas?"
Viewers with information and guesses about the origin of the 2-minute film can submit comments on the Guggenheim's blog or Facebook page.
