OAKWOOD — Gov. Andrew Cuomo has expanded the buyout zone for homes damaged by Hurricane Sandy in Oakwood Beach by around 120 homes, the Staten Island Advance reported.

The homes near Fox Beach Avenue, which were added to the list of eligible properties by the state, brings the total number of homes eligible for the program to 300, the paper reported. The program could also reportedly have a potential expansion of up to 510 homes.

Homes in the area will be eligible for a buyout of the pre-storm value of their house, plus a 10 percent incentive if the owners decide to stay in the borough.

In May, Senators Andrew Lanza and Diane Savino asked Cuomo to consider expanding the buyout program, including to neighborhoods not in Oakwood Beach, the Advance reported.

Savino told the Advance that the addition of 120 homes was “wonderful news” but said, “The fight continues to have sections of South Beach, like Sunnymeade Village, sections of Great Kills Beach, Midland Beach, Ocean Breeze and New Dorp Beach included in new or expanded enhanced zones."
