NEW YORK CITY — The National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch for the New York City area as heavy rains pelted the city on Tuesday.

The city will see between one and three inches of rain over a short period of time, which could cause flash flooding to small streams and low lying areas, according to the agency.

The warning, issued for the five boroughs and surrounding area, will last through the afternoon, the Weather Service said.
