STAPLETON — Puerto Rican music and dancing are on the way to Tappen Park this weekend.

Staten Island Arts will host "The Bomba Music Festival in the Park" on Saturday, to celebrate the traditional Puerto Rican music style.

“Just like the compact disc is becoming obsolete, the bomba rhythm and community style drum circles are becoming obsolete in New York City,” Staten Island Arts said in a press release. “This program will educate and entertain about the important cultural history of Afro-Puerto Rican bomba rhythm and dance and how it shows the African heritage of Puerto Rico."

The festival will include a performance by Plena Dura Y Bomba Group, featuring Jose and Nydia Ocasio.

The night will also feature a presentation by Nydia Ocasio on the traditional clothing worn for bomba and the significance of the clothes and dance.

The “Bomba Music Festival in the Park” will be held Aug. 3 at 2 p.m. in Tappen Park. For more information, visit the Staten Island Arts website.
