QUEENS  — At least six bicycles have been stolen from bike racks in Forest Hills recently, police sources said Wednesday.

The bikes were locked, but the thieves cut the locks, according to the sources.

Most of the incidents took place around Austin Street and 71st Avenue, near the 71st Avenue subway station.

Peter Beadle, a member of Transportation Alternatives Queens Activist Committee and the Community Board 6 Transportation Committee, said he was not surprised to hear about the thefts because the area has become popular with riders who leave their bikes there before taking the subway.

“People need to be aware that they need to lock their bikes properly and not just take it for granted that because they are in a shopping area with lots of people around, people won’t take advantage,” Beadle said. “It’s very unfortunate.”
