Catch a Show Without Spending a Dime at Staten Island Summer Concerts

STATEN ISLAND — With temperatures on the rise, what better way to cool down from the summer heat than with free tunes?

From oldies, to hip-hop, to salsa, to opera to post-punk, Staten Island has concerts for all tastes during the summer.

DNAinfo New York compiled a list of all the places to catch live music in the borough without spending a dime.

July 18: Starlight Concerts summer series, sponsored by Borough President James Molinaro, kicks off their at Silver Lake Park at 7 p.m.

The first concert will feature oldies band The Clusters and classic rock group The Seawater Band. The Clusters rose to No. 10 on the Billboard charts in 1958 with their songs “Darling Can’t You Tell” and “Pardon My Heart.”

July 22: While rain may have put a damper of the first weekend of the street festival Van Duzer Days, the second weekend is still scheduled to go on with a full day of live music.

Scheduled to play are local funk-rock Friction Division, all-girl post-punk band Yeti, hip-hop group The Rising Sun Allstars and more. Music starts at 1 p.m. and ends at 6 p.m.

July 25: Enjoy seven favorite opera arias at The Metropolitan Opera’s Summer Recital Series in Clove Lakes Park, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. The performance will feature Met artists Ying Fang (soprano), Mario Chang (tenor), 7 Brandon Cedel (bass-baritone), accompanied by pianist Bradley Moore.

Also that night, the Starlight Concerts continue with oldies group The Expressions and Jimmy Buffet Tribute band Parrotbeach at Snug Harbor Cultural Center.

July 30-31: Tappen Park will host two concerts back to back featuring radio DJ Felix Hernadez’s Rhythm Revue mix of soul, Motown, funk and salsa from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

On July 31, Hernadez will be joined with Brooklyn a cappella group The Persuasions.

August 1: Famed percussionist Johnny Ray will play salsa music at Tappen Park from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

August 2: A group of local musicians will play a night of Beatles covers at the Richmond County Ballpark to raise awareness for Austim, sponsor by Molinaro. The annual Beatles Blast will start at 7 p.m.

August 8: The Starlight Concert series will continue at the Conference House Park with Billy Joel cover band 52nd Street and Witness.

August 12: SummerStage Kids will bring Robbi K & Friends jazz improvisation presentation of original and standards to Willowbrook Park from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

August 14: Little Club Heads, a DJ that creates a dance party for children and their parents, will spin the latest dance records and original songs at Faber Park from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

August 15: The Starlight Concerts will host their final event at Clove Lakes Park featuring De’ja Vu and Alive n’ Kickin’.

August 17-18: The annual August Back to the Beach celebrations will have fireworks, and feature performances from Brooklyn Keys, Function 11, Reminisce, and Rave On.

August 21: The final SummerStage Kids event on Staten Island will bring The Ohmies interactive story with singing and dancing to Faber Park from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

August 30: The final concert scheduled for the summer is the borough president’s annual End of the Summer Doo-Wop Concert at Wolfes Pond Park.

The event, starting at 6:30 p.m., will feature Cameos and Manhattan Skyline with fireworks closing out the night at 9 p.m. Rain date is set for August 31.
