MIDTOWN — Broadway theaters will dim their lights Wednesday evening in memory of James Gandolfini.

Lights in the theaters' marquees will be dimmed for one minute, starting at 8 p.m., for the celebrated television, stage and film star who died of a heart attack Wednesday in Rome, Italy.

"James Gandolfini was a consummate actor who brought individuality to each role and inspired a true connection with the audience," Broadway League executive director Charlotte St. Martin said in a statement. "Our thoughts go out to his family and friends, and certainly to all of his friends who felt as if they knew his characters."

Gandolfini's funeral will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine.

The actor, who hailed from New Jersey but lived in TriBeCa, rose to fame playing angst-ridden mob boss Tony Soprano on HBO's "The Sopranos," a role that earned him three Emmy awards and three nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. He also earned acclaim for his role in Broadway's adaptation of "God of Carnage," for which he received a 2009 Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Play, as well as the 1992 stage revival of "A Streetcar Named Desire."

He also appeared in a range of films, including "Zero Dark Thirty," "Killing Them Softly," "In the Loop" and "Crimson Tide."

Gandolfini had been traveling with his family in Italy for an appearance at the Taormina Film Festival.
