HELL'S KITCHEN — A massive mural made by kids from three local schools will be seen by millions after being unveiled in the Port Authority Bus Terminal Wednesday.

The 18-by-6-foot mural will hang in the terminal's entrance at West 40th Street and Eighth Avenue for the next year, featuring the culmination of work by students from P.S. 94 in The Bronx, the Mount Vernon Elementary School in Newark and the Arts Horizons LeRoy Neiman Art Center in Harlem.

The students, from kindergarten through eighth grade, created the mural in a collaboration with Arts Horizons, a nonprofit that brings professional teaching artists to schools in the area. Walking into the terminal on Wednesday morning, the children stood in awe of their work on display in such a huge way, each pointing to the section they helped create.

The kids imagined a mosaic telling 14 different stories of people and animals traveling around New York City, including a dog who lives in a cupcake mansion traveling to a swanky party, and a high school teacher who solves crimes using X-ray vision. The mural, called "Art Beyond the Horizons," was the end result.

"Like any project I do with children, I was surprised with what they came up with," said artist Kit Sailer, who worked with the kids on the mural.

About 200,000 people walk through the entrance each day, according to Port Authority officials, meaning the young artists will get lots of exposure.

"They did a wonderful job in capturing the vibrancy of transportation and the whole vibrancy of movement," said Stephen Napolitano, the general manager of the bus terminal, after seeing the mural.

"Who said bus travel can't be glamorous?"
