NEW YORK — Police are offering a $12,000 reward for tips that help catch the killer of 14-year-old Shaniesha Forbes, whose naked, burned body was found in Gerritsen Beach in January.

Forbes' death was ruled a homicide on Thursday, after a months-long investigation by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner revealed that she was asphyxiated, officials said.

Cops planned to speak to some of the last people who saw Forbes alive before her body was found at Gerritsen and Lois avenues Jan. 6, sources said.

The NYPD is offering $10,000 for information leading to the killer's arrest and conviction. Crime Stoppers is offering an additional $2,000 for information leading to the killer's arrest and indictment.

Forbes was a student at East New York's Academy for Young Writers and dreamed of one day becoming a nurse.

Forbes' family, who described the teen as innocent and trusting, begged anyone with information to come forward and help solve the crime.

"If they saw something, they should say something," Sandra Price, 42, Forbes' mother, told DNAinfo.com New York Thursday. "It could be their child someday."

Anyone with information is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS. The public can also log onto the Crime Stoppers website to submit tips or text tips to 274637(CRIMES) then enter TIP577.
