By Julie Shapiro | April 26, 2013 7:02pm | Updated on April 26, 2013 7:09pm

THE BRONX — A 22-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in a Bronx stairwell earlier this week, police said.

The suspect followed the woman into a building lobby near East 158th Street and Melrose Avenue about 4:10 a.m. April 21, then grabbed her and pulled her sweatshirt over her head, police said.

He then forced her into a stairwell and demanded that she remove her pants, police said. He also displayed an "unknown object" to threaten her, the NYPD said.

The woman fought off the attacker, who fled, but he left her with cuts and bruises on her lip and neck, police said.

Police described the suspect as a man in his 20s, 5-foot-7 to 5-foot-8, 130 pounds, last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and a black ski mask.

Anyone with information is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS.  The public can also submit tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers website at WWW.NYPDCRIMESTOPPERS.COM or texting their tips to 274637(CRIMES) then entering TIP577.
