New Bikes Lanes Roll into Park Slope

PARK SLOPE — Two new bike lanes cruised onto South Slope streets this week as part of a slew of safety upgrades aimed at slowing speeding cars.

The new lanes were painted onto 14th and 15th streets between Eighth Avenue and Third Avenue.

The city's Department of Transportation says it's adding the lanes to calm traffic and prevent dangerous driving in an area where there are many "vulnerable users" — children and seniors who visit the Park Slope Armory YMCA on 15th Street and Eighth Avenue, and kids at P.S. 107 on 14th Street and Eighth Avenue.

The DOT also plans to install painted crosswalk extensions on 15th Street at both Eighth Avenue and Fourth Avenue to make crossing distances shorter for pedestrians. On-street bike parking, benches and planters will be installed on 15th Street outside the Armory entrance, according to the DOT.

At 15th Street and Bartel Pritchard Square, the DOT recently added a new traffic signal and new painted crosswalks to make crossing safer. The intersection is known for having close calls between pedestrians and speeding cars.
