Two Drivers Hurt After Crashing Into Scaffolding in Midtown

By  Bryan Graham and Ben Fractenberg | April 16, 2013 7:16pm

MIDTOWN — Two people were hospitalized late Tuesday afternoon when their cars ran onto a sidewalk and hit scaffolding in Midtown, authorities said.

The accident took place at 48 W. 48th St. about 5 p.m., fire officials said, prompting the closure of the block between Fifth and Sixth avenues.

The crash occurred when a car exiting a parking garage hit an SUV, which was in front of a metal frame supporting 12 stories of scaffolding, officials said.

The two drivers, whose identities were not immediately released, were taken to Bellevue Hospital, where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries, fire officials added.

Authorities arriving on the scene put in two temporary wooden braces to support the scaffolding after it was struck.
