Earth Day Comes to Inwood With Parade and Street Fair

By Nigel Chiwaya | April 16, 2013 12:33pm

INWOOD — Inwood is throwing a bash for Mother Earth.

Dozens of students and residents are expected at Intermediate School 52 on April 22 for the second annual Earth Day celebration.

The festivities, organized by the students and staff and I.S. 52 and the Rotary Club of Inwood include a parade around the school, an assembly, featuring ConEdison Sustainability Manager Morgan Scott as the keynote speaker, and a street fair, which will feature eco-friendly tips for residents to implement in their households.

"We're really hoping people will take this home to the their community," said Rotary Club member Kyla Williamson.

The celebration's is part of an ongoing initiative at I.S. 52 to teach students about sustainability, said Pamela Scott, a science teacher at the school. Scott's eight-grade students, who over the past year have worked to clean up the streets of Inwood, will be presenting eco-friendly projects they made at the street fair, including a bird-feeder that they were inspired to create after watching a bird eat plastic on the ground.

"Once kids realize that they are being heard they become that much more involved," Scott said of her students.

The celebration will begin at 9:00 a.m. in front of I.S. 52 at 650 Academy Street. For more information, visit https://www.facebook.com/RotaryClubOfInwoodManhattan
