Gunman Arrested in Fatal Bronx Shootout, Cops Say

NEW YORK CITY — Police have arrested the gunman in a brazen midday shootout that left a man dead in a Morrisania courtyard Thursday, they said.

Gregory Forbes, 24, was charged with murder in the shooting of 28-year-old Mario Thomas, who died after the 2 p.m. gunbattle in the courtyard of the McKinley Houses, near 161st Street, according to the NYPD.

At least two dozen bullets were unleashed in the attack, according to witnesses, who said
there were multiple gunmen opening fire simultaneously around the courtyard — which contains a playground, garden, and other greenery.

"I was scared to death," said Rev. Wallace Diamond, who witnessed the incident.

Cops were not able to confirm his account and said that they were not searching for any additional suspects.

After the shootout, Thomas was rushed to Lincoln Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Cops, some with bullet proof vests and shields, descended on the courtyard moments after the gun fight. Then about 4:15 p.m., they walked a man in handcuffs from one of the apartments into a waiting squadcar.

Forbes has been charged with murder, criminal possession and use of a firearm, police said.
