CHELSEA — A would-be Chelsea subway thief who tried to snatch a straphanger's iPad mini Monday was thwarted when the rider chased him down and grabbed it back, cops say.

The suspect snatched the 25-year-old victim's tablet right out of his hands inside the West 28th Street subway station and bounded down the uptown platform about 10 p.m., according to the NYPD.

But before the thief could get far, the straphanger chased him down, grappled with him and ultimately recovered his $329 device, cops said.

The suspect, who cops said is in his late 20s and about 5-feet-8-inches, dashed off after the incident, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS (8477).
