Queens Cycling Studio Looks to Get New Moms Back in the Spin of Things

By Ewa Kern-Jedrychowska | March 28, 2013 7:02pm

QUEENS — A Forest Hills cycling studio that opened this month is trying to address the needs of a growing group of young mothers in the neighborhood by launching morning classes with mom-friendly music and exercises to get them in shape.

Suncycle Studios, which opened its new Forest Hills location on Continental Avenue, is hoping to become a meet-up place for mothers.

“We are trying to build a little community so that moms have someone to share time with,” said Kenny Pena, one of the owners who also teaches classes.

The studio specializes in telling stories during the class, allowing people to imagine that they are riding through mountains and desserts, or trying to make a red light on Queens Boulevard.

Suncycle incorporates the strength training with cycling and using dumbbells.

The studio has adapted its 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. classes for moms, said Pena.

The focus is on shaping the body which is great for mothers who still have baby weight or who don’t have time to exercise, he noted.

According to the studio, its fusion workout will allow women to shape their arms and shoulders.

“You are not getting off the bike, your wheels keep moving so your heart rate is still up but you are doing shoulder presses at the same time,” Pena said. “Moms want to wear spaghetti tops, they want to wear tank tops, they want to show off their arms and their shoulders.”

The studio has another, larger location in the Rockaways, that offers babysitting services for exercising moms.

The limited space at the smaller Forest Hills location makes providing similar services there difficult, the studio said.

“So we hope to get moms after they drop kids off at daycare or at school,” Pena said.

During those classes the music is softer and more ‘mom-friendly’, Pena said.

Suncycle Studios is located at 5 71st/Continental Avenue (the Mini Mall). A single walk-in class is $25. 30-day unlimited packages cost $150. Classes are about 45-55 minutes long.
