Bed-Stuy Coffee Shop Hosts 'Thursday Night Throwdown' Latte Art Competition

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT — Baristas, start your espresso machines.

Bedford-Stuyvesant coffee shop the Daily Press is this week hosting the traveling Thursday Night Throwdown, a monthly competition held in coffee shops around the city which pits barista versus barista in a battle for latte art supremacy.

On the third Thursday of every month, competitors from across the city flock to a designated coffee shop to square off in a bracket-style tournament, where they'll show off their best rosetta or tulip design.

"Symmetry's really important, contrast's really important," said Daily Press manager Ashley Rodriguez. "It's really informal, and a lot of fun."

Dozens of people are expected to flock to the event at 505 Franklin Ave., including competitors and a bevy of coffee industry onlookers, Rodriguez said.

The single-elimination competitions are held on the third Thursday of every month. This month, the buy in is $10, Rodriguez said. The winner will advance into a series final, with a chance to take home a special throwdown trophy, according to the event's website.

And the winner will also get to take home the whole pot, Rodriguez said.

"Which is nice," Rodriguez added, "because baristas don't make any money."
