Carroll Street Bridge Over Gowanus Canal Closing to Traffic

GOWANUS — The Carroll Street bridge over the Gowanus Canal will close to all traffic for at least four months starting April 1, Community Board 6 announced Monday.

The bridge, one of five along the Gowanus Canal, will be shuttered to cars, bicyclists, and pedestrians while the city's Department of Transportation renovates it.

DOT will revamp the bridge, which was first built in 1889, by replacing its "deteriorated timber deck" and making other upgrades, according to an announcement on the Community Board 6 website.

The DOT is directing motorists and cyclists to use the nearby Union Street bridge as an alternative.

The work will take place from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays and is expected to be finished in August.

The bridge, between Bond and Nevins streets, is reportedly one of only four retractile bridges in the United States, meaning that it can slide back and forth on a track to allow boats to pass through.
