NEW YORK CITY — A train derailment caused widespread disruptions on the Long Island Rail Road ahead of Tuesday morning's rush-hour commute, the MTA said.
Four cars of a LIRR train that was moving equipment ran off the rails about 9 p.m. Monday night near the Forest Hills station, seriously damaging nearly 4,000 feet of track and surrounding infrastructure, an MTA spokesman said.
No passengers were aboard the train when it derailed and the MTA said no one was injured in the accident.
Crews worked through the night to repair the damaged tracks, but 11 early morning trains on nearly every line were cancelled and five were re-routed as a result. Four other trains terminated at Jamaica.
Additional trains were provided to accommodate passengers affected by the cancellations, according to the MTA.
Two lines — Port Washington and West Hempstead — were unaffected.
The MTA said crews will continue to repair the damage throughout Tuesday, but said it was difficult to predict if service changes will continue into the afternoon.
Commuters were advised to expect extra travel time and check the MTA website for updates.
