QUEENS — The popular Forest Park Carousel is reopening this weekend, just in time for public schools' spring break, its operator said Monday.
The carousel is slated to kick off its second season on Saturday, March 23, and is planning to remain open daily until Tuesday, April 2.
After that, the ride will continue to operate on weekends until schools let out, and then daily in the summertime.
"We are really excited to get open," said Ami Abramson, director of NY Carousel.
He also said there are plans to add a new carnival game this season. And there will be other events, including a DJ dance night for kids during Memorial Day weekend.
The historic carousel reopened last May after years of neglect.
Abramson said that the attraction has been a big success and last year it sold about 30,000 rides. A single ride costs $3.
The hand-carved carousel, which is more than 100 years old, has been in the park since the 1970s. The original Forest Park carousel burned down in 1966. The current ride was moved to Queens in 1973 from Massachusetts, where it had been carved in 1903. The carousel is under active consideration to become a landmark.
Abramson said that the company, which also operates the Flushing Meadows-Corona Park carousel, plans to add more attractions around the carousel in Forest Park.
