New Village Restaurant Slide Offers Inventive Take on Mini Burgers

GREENWICH VILLAGE — If your idea of the slider still begins and ends at White Castle, the owner of a new Village restaurant wants you to stop in.

Slide, the new "American small plates comfort food" eatery at 174 Bleecker St., specializes in sliders, but fans of the fast-food chain's mini hamburgers probably wouldn't place Slide's menu in the same food family — with options including mushroom bourguignon, smoked duck and buttermilk fried chicken on cheddar waffles.

Slider skeptics change their minds once they try the creations of executive chef and "Iron Chef" alum Madison Cowan, owner Anthony Fontana said before Slide opened on Monday night.

"Even if you're thinking, 'Oh, it's a slider, I know this,' you don't know until you try," he said. "You taste these ingredients and you get it."

Slide will serve a rotating selection of about nine sliders, with plates of three running from $14 to $17.

The current menu includes a burger with Manchego cheese, plum tomatoes, arugula, remoulade and caramelized onions ($15); buttermilk fried chicken on cheddar waffles, topped with maple bourbon pear butter ($16); and smoked duck with duck fat chips and blackberry chutney, served on a parmesan bun ($17).

On the dessert menu are cannoli from Fontana's company Stuffed. A "cannoli flight" of three costs $9 and on Monday included black cherry chocolate chunk, a coconut cream flavor modeled off the Almond Joy candy bar, and a lemony traditional cannoli.

Milkshakes with or without alcohol are also available. The Sweet Home Alabama shake is made with butter pecan ice cream and topped with whipped cream and candied pecans ($7). For an extra $4, Slide, which is located in the former Mussel Pot location, will add bourbon.
