EAST HARLEM — Two quick cops nabbed a rapist while he was attacking an elderly woman in an elevator Tuesday morning, the NYPD said.

A good smaritan alerted the two cops to an assault in an elevator headed to the third floor of the James Weldon Johnson Houses on Lexington Avenue about 11:20 a.m., a police spokeswoman said.

The two raced to the first floor where the elevator had stopped and pried open its doors to find 50-year-old Angel Hernandez atop the woman, the spokeswoman said.

After they pried him off, the victim, whose identity was not immediately released, was taken to St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center and treated for minor injuries, cops said.

Hernandez has been charged with rape, sexual abuse, assault, and strangulation, police said.
