INWOOD — A newly formed Washington Heights youth chorus is preparing to take the stage for the first time ever in a concert in Inwood Thursday night.

More than 60 members of the Young People's Chorus of Washington Heights are scheduled to perform at the Washington Heights Academy at 202 Sherman Ave., singing English and Spanish songs such as "Tecolote" and "When You Wish Upon a Star."

The chorus is an offshoot of the Young People's Chorus of New York City, a 25-year-old program that provides choral direction to more 1,200 city children between the ages of 7 to 11.

The Washington Heights chorus was founded last November.

Several uptown schools are represented in the chorus, including the Washington Heights Academy, Amistad Dual Language School, P.S. 98 Shorac Kappock, P.S. 314 Muscota New School and P.S. 173.

"I am so proud of these amazingly talented and enthusiastic children who are so excited to learn and, even more, to perform," conductor Johnny Rabe said in a statement announcing the concert.

The performance will begin at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free.
