City's First Food Truck Powered by Natural Gas Slings 'Green' Pizza

By Irene Plagianos | February 21, 2013 3:52pm

CITY HALL PARK — The city's greenest food truck is now slinging pizzas.

Neapolitan Express, New York's first food truck fully powered by natural gas, rolled into City Hall Park Thursday to give Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Texas energy mogul T. Boone Pickens a taste of the freshly made pies.

“Every slice comes with a breath of fresh air,” Bloomberg said before biting into a margherita slice.

The truck, which will hit the city's streets next week, produces about 70 percent less carbon emissions than gasoline or diesel-fueled food trucks — and it also cuts gas costs by about 60 percent, Bloomberg said.

Owner Max Crespo, who worked with Pickens' Clean Energy Fuels company to launch Neapolitan Express, said he hopes to roll out another five trucks in the area soon. He also plans to run trucks in other cities, including Philadelphia and San Antonio, in the near future.
