Stunning Desert Photos From Around the World Go On Display Downtown

BATTERY PARK CITY — Award-winning National Geographic photographer George Steinmetz’s sweeping aerial views of the world’s most remote deserts have landed Downtown.

The Sahara’s massive sand dunes, the Gobi desert’s rocky outcrops and vast stretches of Antarctica’s frozen landscape are all on display at Brookfield Place’s “George Steinmetz: Desert Air” photography exhibit through March 15.

Steinmetz has spent the past 15 years traveling the world, capturing stunning images of some of the most far-flung, desolate corners of Earth — all from a bird's-eye view.

To snap his expansive vistas, the photographer hovers above the deserts using the “lightest and slowest motorized paraglider that exists,” according to Brookfield Properties, which commissioned the display of 42 large-scale prints of Steinmetz's work.

The show also dovetails with Steinmetz's newly released book, which shares the exhibit's title, "Desert Air."

“George Steinmetz is one of the leading nature photographers working today, and we are thrilled to present the exclusive companion exhibition to his stunning new book,” said Debra Simon, vice president and artistic director of Arts Brookfield, in a statement.

“Steinmetz’s work offers an extraordinary perspective on parts of the world most of us will never see, while underscoring the pressing need to preserve these areas from increasing environmental threat.”

The free exhibition is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily through March 15 at Brookfield Place, formerly known as the World Financial Center, 220 Vesey St.
