NEW YORK CITY — It brought flooding and destruction — and now vermin.
Months after Hurricane Sandy ravaged the city, some neighborhoods are struggling with an infestation of rats, The New York Times reported Thursday.
Exterminators were reportedly overwhelmed with calls from DUMBO, Brooklyn Heights and Lower Manhattan shortly after the hurricane, and now the pests have gotten used to their new digs.
Specialists originally thought many rats would drown in subway tunnels, according to The Times, but after the storm passed those that survived headed inland and feasted.
"There’s so much garbage out in the streets these days. Renovations because of the flood. Christmas trees," Timothy Wong, a manager at pest control company M&M Environmental told The Times.
"These things make it worse. For them, it’s Restaurant Week."
