Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Offers Artists 9-Month Studio Residency

By Irene Plagianos | January 25, 2013 9:14am

LOWER MANHATTAN — Studio space is hard to come by for young artists and writers in Manhattan — especially when it’s free and comes with a mentorship.

But that’s exactly what the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council is offering with its nine-month “Workspace” residency program, which is now accepting applications.

Selected artists and writers are given their own private or semi-private space in lower Manhattan that comes complete with WiFi access, a desk, chair and around-the-clock access.

Those chosen are also immersed in a professional and creative development program that includes studio visits, talks and seminars, networking with peers, and a variety of public programs.

Artists will also have the chance to present the fruits of their labor to the public during a few open studio sessions.

About 15 to 20 visual artists and six to eight writers are selected for each Workspace session, which lasts from September to May.

Workspace receives almost 1,000 applications every year — 900 from visual artists and 100 from writers.

Last year, all the residents worked out of space in 1 Liberty Plaza, but this year's location has not yet been announced.

Applicants have until January 31 at 5 p.m. to apply.

For more information, and to apply, visit the LMCC’s website.
