10-Year-Old Girl Abducted Outside Her Canarsie Home, Sources Say

CANARSIE — A 10-year-old girl was snatched off the street outside her Canarsie home Thursday morning by a man who hit her in the head, but she was able to escape after she screamed for help, police sources said.

The girl had just left her home in a public housing complex on East 108th Street about 8:30 a.m., when a man struck up a conversation with her, asking her something to the effect of, "Have you ever been kissed?" sources said.

The man then grabbed the girl, dragged her into a neighboring building in the same development and pushed her into the elevator, according to police sources.

He brought her up to the seventh floor, near an exit to the roof, and then hit her in the head with one of his shoes and threw her to the ground, sources said.

The girl screamed, and the suspect fled, sources said.

She was taken to Kings County Hospital, where she is in stable condition, sources and officials said.

Ziggy Campbell, 27, was in his seventh-floor apartment Thursday morning when he heard the victim screaming.

"I hear a female yelling, 'Help me, help me, they're coming to get me,'" Campbell said.

The girl was knocking frantically on another apartment's door on the same hallway, but Campbell said he heard the woman inside yell, "Go away, go away."

Campbell peered out the peephole in his door and saw the back of the girl's head as she fled down the stairs, and shortly afterward he saw her talking to building workers outside, he said.

Campbell — who has a 10-year-old daughter who lives in The Bronx — and others said they were horrified by the attack.

"They are going for the little kids now," said Tina Moodie, 27, who used to live in the building.

Police described the suspect as a 16-to-25-year-old man, 6 feet tall, last seen wearing a black sweatshirt and black jeans.
