Elderly Man Struck, Killed by School Bus Near Ocean Parkway, Police Say

SHEEPSHEAD BAY — A 78-year-old man was struck and killed by a small school bus near Ocean Parkway Tuesday morning, officials said.

The bus was heading east on Kings Highway and turned north onto Ocean Parkway about 6:50 a.m. That's when the vehicle slammed into the pedestrian, throwing him approximately 20 feet, according to the FDNY and witnesses.

The pedestrian, who was bleeding from his face, was taken to Lutheran Medical Center, where he died, fire and police officials said.

"The guy was not okay. He was out on the floor...not moving," said Danny Mizrachi, 51, who lives in the area and saw the accident. "He did not say anything."

The victim's name has been withheld pending family notification.

No passengers were aboard the bus at the time, officials said.

The 60-year-old driver remained at the scene and no criminality was suspected though the investigation is ongoing, police said.

The incident marks the latest of hundreds of incidents in which a school bus was involved in an accident in the city. DNAinfo.com New York reported earlier this month that there were more than 1,700 other school bus accidents last year, which resulted in more than 900 injuries.
