MIDTOWN — Police have released a “person of interest” they were interviewing in connection with the Midtown assassination of a California man earlier this week, sources said.
Investigators had been grilling a man who borrowed the car used as a getaway vehicle in the shooting, sources said. Police found the vehicle abandoned in Jamaica, Queens, about 4:30 a.m. yesterday.
“There’s no arrest, no suspect in custody,” a police source said. “Multiple people have been spoken to in different forms or capacities.”
The gunman who shot Brandon Lincoln Woodard, 31, in the head on 58th Street, between Seventh Avenue and Broadway, just before 2 p.m. Monday fled the scene in a Lincoln MKZ with another person, police said.
The car had been rented before the murder by a woman who told police she had lent it to the man who was questioned on Wednesday, sources said.
The getaway car was seen entering the Queens-Midtown Tunnel shortly after the shooting and did not use EZ Pass, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Tuesday.
Woodard, a student at Whittier Law School, was texting on his phone and appeared to be waiting to meet someone when a hooded man fired a single shot into the back of his head, cops said.
Woodard, who had 20 prior arrests in California for crimes ranging from drug possession to a misdemeanor hit-and-run charge, had come to the city to visit a friend, his mom said Wednesday.
