LOWER MANHATTAN — The first piece of One World Trade Center’s crowning spire was hoisted atop the 104-story building Wednesday morning.
Nine massive, steel sections of the spire arrived at Pier 25 Tuesday morning via barge, after making a monthlong journey from Canada, where the sections were produced.
The 408-foot, $20 million spire will be constructed from 18 pieces in total. Some of the sections are already at the site, while the remainder will be trucked in from Canada.
The addition of the iconic spire will make the WTC the city’s tallest building, at the symbolic height of 1,776 feet.
Steven Plate, the WTC’s director of construction, has said he hopes to see the full spire, which will be a functioning communications tower, rise into the air by next spring.
