Russian Tea Room's New Breakfast Tempts with Caviar Omelet

MIDTOWN — Forget bacon and eggs: It's time to say "da" to caviar for breakfast.

The 85-year-old Russian Tea Room, long a mainstay of the city's actors, politicians and powerbrokers, will for the first time serve breakfast starting Monday.

Jumping on board the brunch train, the restaurant's extensive new morning menu offers both Russian and American breakfast classics — all for a price that would raise eyebrows in the former Soviet Union.

For the high-class bruncher looking for something classy, the restaurant at 150 W. 57th St. will serve its signature caviar in the morning, ranging from $60 for 2 ounces of wild Alaskan salmon roe, to $295 for an ounce for imported black caviar.

For a more classic breakfast, there's the $28 dollar omelet topped with herbs, sour cream and red caviar, along with the $22 Russian-style smoked salmon benedict.

A selection of Russian-inspired dishes round out the menu, including the $25 Czar's Eggs — a plate of boiled eggs topped with roe and served with blini, a thin Russian pancake. There's also Oladi, thick Russian-style pancakes smothered in sour cream and white roe, for $28.

For larger parties, the Tea Room offers a $120, six-person group menu, which features choices of eggs, pancakes, bagels and mixed baskets of pastries.

For diners with breakfast tastes that are a little more basic, they should be prepared to spend some serious rubles: a bowl of stone-cut oatmeal costs $13, and Russian brioche toast topped with cream costs $18.

The Tea Room, which was closed due to the crane left dangling from a building on West 57th Street during Hurricane Sandy, will donate 10 percent of its proceeds from December breakfast sales to the Food Bank for New York City for storm-relief efforts.
