UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS — Cops were grilling the father of a 5-year-old boy who died after authorities found him unconscious in a West 179th Street apartment Wednesday, the NYPD said.

Stewart Espinal was unresponsive in 86 West 179th Street when cops responded to the apartment about 1:30 a.m. in response to a 911 call about an emotionally disturbed person, police said.

Stewart, who was found in the apartment's bathroom, was taken to St. Barnabus Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police sources said.

The medical examiner will perform an autopsy Thursday to determine the cause of death, a department spokeswoman said.

The boy's father, who was not identified, was taken into custody, police said. He was taken to Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center for a psychiatric evaluation, sources said.

He has not been charged.
