Nacho and Craft Beer Festival On Tap for Long Island City

By Ewa Kern-Jedrychowska | October 24, 2012 12:35pm

LONG ISLAND CITY — If you think the only thing that can make craft beer taste better is a plate of nachos, then the first Nacho and Craft Beer Festival — which will be held this Saturday in Hunters Points — is the place to be.

“We love nachos and we love beer. So we said, 'Let’s do a nacho and beer festival,'” said Patrick Donagher, CEO at Alewife, a Long Island City beer hall, who came up with the idea along with his friend and business partner, David “Rev” Ciancio.

During the festival, participants will have a choice of 30 brews on tap, including craft beer from Barriers in Oceanside and Port Jeff in Port Jefferson in Long Island, as well as from the upstate brewery Captain Lawrence and Stone Brewing in California.

There will also be a massive nacho bar serving various kinds of chips, including flavors like fried pasta, pale ale potato and house-fried tortilla.

Dozens of toppings, from veggies and cheeses to creams and sauces, will create endless flavor options for nacho lovers, the organizers said.

For example, participants will be able to mix tortilla chips with dry stout chili, crumbled goat cheese, beer-caramelized onions, topped with cranberry lime tequila salsa; or add balsamic marinated grilled Portobello mushroom, truffle Swiss sauce and pickled jalapeño to potato chips, instead.

For $35, festivalgoers will get two trips to the nacho bar for two full plates of ‘pick-your-own-topping’ nachos, a choice of 10 craft beers samples and 50 percent off additional craft beers for two hours.

Alewife NYC is located at 5-14 51st Ave. Participants can choose one of three sessions to attend (12-3 p.m., 3-6 p.m. and 6-9 p.m.). Tickets are $70, $35 with code “Nachos51.”
