Forest Hills Staples Closing Down as Fro-Yo Shop Set to Open

By Nigel Chiwaya | October 19, 2012 2:49pm

QUEENS — Shoppers in Forest Hills will have to trek farther for office supplies in November, as the Staples on Continental Avenue is closing down at the end of the month.

An employee at the store said the Staples, located at 107-16 71st Ave., declined to renew its lease after its landlord increased the rent.

We're an express store, so we don't sell furniture. It's not worth it, we don't make enough sales."

The store will shutter for good on Oct. 28, leaving the nearest remaining Staples in Rego Park. One is located at 90-30 Metropolitan Ave. while the other is in the Rego Center Mall at 61-35 Junction Blvd.

On the Horizon
Forest Hills is getting yet another frozen Yogurt store, as Twist-it-n-Top-it Frozen Yogurt has placed a "coming soon" banner at 103-11 Metropolitan Ave. The store's owner, Angelo Gurino, said that when the store opens it will offer 15 yogurt flavors and over 50 toppings.

Gurino, who operates a second location in Howard Beach, said that the store should be ready to open in January or February.

A new arts and crafts store will open on Metropolitan Avenue just in time for winter. Construction has begun on Oliloli Studio, located at 103-23 Metropolitan Ave.

Sandra Mandell, the store's owner, said that the studio will feature pottery painting and glass-fusing classes, along with tablecrafts, story times, and parent's night outs, where parents can socialize.

"The neighborhood needed this type of space," said Mandell, a mother of two that has lived in Forest Hills for 12 years. "We needed a place where families and neighbors can meet up and have fun."
