Famous Lost Chihuaha Spotted in Canarsie

By Meredith Hoffman | October 10, 2012 4:05pm

GREENPOINT — Since her chihuaha Myrtle disappeared last weekend, Danielle Maveal has drawn celebrity tweets, a search party and even television news coverage — and then Tuesday night the desperate Greenpoint dog owner caught a glimmer of hope.

"A woman had just seen the show and she was freaked out because ten minutes before she'd just seen the black chihuaha," Maveal said of a phone call she received from Canarsie after ABC News featured the pup. "I went out and looked around for her, it was raining really hard."

Maveal, whose six-pound pup was lost late Friday night by McGolrick Park, searched until 3:30 a.m. Wednesday in Canarsie, she said — but in the end her spirits were lower than ever.

"The fact she could have run that far is just discouraging, because everywhere you look is just blocks and blocks," Maveal cried into the phone Wednesday. "Which way do you go?"

Maveal — a small business consultant who has created a Find Myrtle blog and has used her social media savvy to prompt tweets by Neko Case, the Mountain Goats, and other well-known performers — said she still won't give up seeking her only dog, who slept in bed with her every night.

She created a "21 ways you can help find Myrtle" list Wednesday, and urged her readers both to seek her pet and to hold tight to their own.

"Hug your pets. Tighten their collars," she advised on her blog. "Make sure they are microchipped (Myrtle was, hopefully it helps)."
