Cornel West to Speak at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sunset Park

By Alan Neuhauser | October 9, 2012 11:18am

SUNSET PARK — Writer, activist and Princeton professor Cornel West visits Trinity Lutheran Church in Sunset Park on Friday, Dec. 7, for a conversation on civil rights issues with senior pastor and fellow activist Sam Cruz.

The talk, titled "Common Ground and Common Hope: Black/Latino Dialogue," starts at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free, but tickets are required.

There is no set agenda for the discussion, associate pastor Vanessa Cardinale said. Instead, "The hope is that it's a conversation — it's supposed to be a dialogue," she described. "What comes up, comes up: looking at communities of color, issues that are relevant."

West and Cruz have both been vocal critics of the NYPD's stop-and-frisk tactics, which they and others say disproportionately targets blacks and Latinos. They have also visibly supported the Occupy movement: West visited Zuccotti Park during the Occupy Wall Street protests last September, and Cruz has appeared at Occupy Sunset Park rallies.

Their Dec. 7 talk marks the first time West will be visiting Trinity Lutheran Church. Reserve tickets by visiting the talk's EventBrite page.
