SUV Slams into Canarsie Home Monday

By Ben Fractenberg | October 8, 2012 8:17pm

CANARSIE — An elderly woman was taken to the hospital Monday after she drove her SUV into a residential building in Canarsie.

The car veered off the road at the intersection of Farragut Road and East 85th Street just before 5 p.m., slamming into the steps of the two-story building.

Thelma Son, 45, was in her living room when she heard a bang.

"I looked out my window and saw a vehicle in my yard," she said. "When I opened the door, I saw the lady coming out."

Son said an ambulance arrived on the scene within 10 minutes to treat the woman, who "looked like she was in shock," Son said.

"I was a little shocked 'cause the house is so far away from the road," added Son, who said her steps are about 100 feet from the street.

Luckily, no one in the building was injured, but there was serious damage to the stairs, Son explained.

"The whole foundation of the steps is broken," she said. "It has a lot of cracks. It looks like we'll have to do whole new steps."

The fire department said they transported someone from the scene to Brookdale University Hospital but didn't immediately know the woman's condition.
